Grady’s reflections on the Old Testament

I am going to pick one thing that stood out to me from our E100 study of the Old Testament, it’s something that I absolutely love and have learned so much about in the Fall semester. What I learned, was that the Old Testament is chock full of regular people, literally the same as you and I! They lived in a different time, with different cultures, but they thought the very same thoughts and went through the very same struggles.

The people that make up a lot of the history that we read have awesome, practical characteristics. They persevered, they worked hard, they succeeded, and they failed. Most importantly, they had some of the most admirable examples of faith. The first example that I can think of is the story of David and Goliath, in which David completely busts the skull of Goliath, a giant Philistine soldier who threatened the well-being of his nation.  He was exactly like anyone off the street, in that he was pretty much an average guy. However, his choice to actually believe God and act on it would eventually kick off his very own giant-slaughtering campaign as well as his eventual king-ship.

I feel like every instance of the Old Testament presents a situation that everyone can relate to at one point or another. It’s as applicable and relevant today as it was in the days that it was written, and for that, I thank God. The people that God use so greatly aren’t great without His help, and neither are we! Our choice to be faithful and receive His equipment is what sets us apart.
